Stunning views over the river Thames in a comfortable Hammersmith often used by film and TV crews as a dramatic riverside location. One wall of the apartment is a series of 16 French windows giving onto a 30ft. south-facing balcony with the Thames not more than 20 feet away !
The nearest underground station is Hammersmith (3mins), and central London (Piccadilly Circus) is 18 mins. The flat has two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, two reception rooms and all modern conveniences.
We love travel, and adore exploring new cultures and experiences, it doesn't take loads of money to have a good time, just intellectual curiosity ..... People, atmosphere and situations are what give life its edge ..... We have a fantastic and slightly unreal life-style here in London ..... Whatever sort of a life-style you can offer ..... we are more than ready to pick up the baton !!!

Photo 2. River Front of Digby Mansions

The apartment is the entire riverside 3rd. floor of an architecturally listed Edwardian mansion block, in an area full of historical associations, not least with the pre-Raphaelite movement. William Morris (who lived and died only 800 yards away), D.G. Rossetti, Burne-Jones, Millais etc. George Bernard Shaw and the artists George Pissaro and J.M.W. Turner also lived in the immediate vicinity.

The light is enchanting, the morning mists and the sunsets are a revelation, and the calming effect of water flowing past the window 24 hours a day is the perfect antidote to a day spent in the bustle of the 'real' world !

The tidal river Thames ebbs and flows right up to the retaining wall of the path below.

Photo 3. The Dining Room View

The 16ft. octagonal dining room has spectacular views of Hammersmith Bridge (built in 1824 & 1887 A.D.) and Fulham and Putney beyond.

This photo was taken in 1989 just as I first moved in (from three doors away !), before the carpets were laid - and before the bridge was re-painted in its original Victorian colour of green and gold.

Photo 4. The Dining Room - east wall

Photo 5. The Dining Room - west wall

There is an art deco dining table which seats 6 very comfortably, 8 easily - and 10 at a squash ! Notice also the artistic 'revealed brick' wall - intentional I promise ..... (!!) with a small monochromatic water colour by a young J.M.W. Turner (1775 -1851) painted whilst he lived nearby.

West wall of dining room with wicker side-board and Victorian 'Polyphon' - an early turn-of-the-century disc musical 'juke-box' (with some spare discs !), obscuring a brass effigy of Sir Robert de Bures of Acton in Suffolk (1302).

We have two double bedrooms, a study, and a double sofa bed in the sitting room. Here is the breakdown :

Photo 7. Bathroom

The first master bedroom, leading directly off the sitting room, has a queen-size bed with a firm mattress, fitted mirror wardrobes, fitted Bang & Olufsen TV with satellite and remote control, CD radio alarm and portable air-conditioning unit in summer.

The en-suite bathroom has WC, extra-large bath, high-pressure shower in separate glass cubicle, heated towel-rail, 110v. razor outlet and a large art deco wash hand-basin and W.C.

Photo 9. Guests' W.C.

The second master bedroom has a queen-sized bed with firm/medium mattress, fitted wardrobe, television and a chest of drawers. The en-suite bathroom has WC, bath and wash hand-basin.

There is a further 'showbiz' WC with hand-basin for guests, concealed behind a hinged bookcase off the entrance hall (to gain entrance you must incline one of the books on the shelves -"Magic Made Easy" ..... it's easy when you know how !). The walls of this room are covered with remnants of my early career as a revue artist, professional magician and stand-up comedian ..... It's not for the faint-hearted !!

Photo 11. Living Room View

The 23ft. living room is at the heart of the apartment with 3 pairs of french windows giving onto the balcony and sweeping views of the bridge, river Thames and the lush green playing fields of St. Paul's School (est. 1509 A.D.) opposite.

Photo 12. Living Room Fireplace

Photo 13. Living Room - looking towards the study

The coal/gas fire gives a warm focal point for winter evenings, ideal for cosy nights "at home" watching films on dvd & video - loads to choose from, or BBC & ITV (or even satellite ..... lots of Jerry Springer and US imports !). Otherwise there is a stereo (+ over 1,000 c.d.'s), and the Broadwood piano should you have a musical urge !

The living room also has a second sofa which makes into a comfortable double bed for any unexpected guests ! An adjacent study (with room for a single bed), has an Apple Mac computer, internet connections, fax machine and three phone lines. It also has private access to one of the en-suite bathrooms.

Photo 14. The Kitchen

The kitchen has a wooden floor, double sink, oven, American Amana fridge-freezer, four-ring gas and electric hob, microwave and all the usual appliances. Also a Miele washing-up machine, automatic espresso coffee machine, washing machine and tumble drier.

There is also a double hatch through to the dining room, and a further french window giving onto a side balcony, directly overlooking the bridge and the main entrance to the building.

Photo 15. Entrance to Building

The main entrance is in a quiet cul-de-sac parallel to Hammersmith Bridge Road. There are parking meters for the general public, but resident's parking for the inhabitants of Digby Mansions.
We have a car (a Lexus 400 automatic) which it might be possible to include if required. It has an automatic global positioning system, which is invaluable for finding your way around London (no convenient - grid system - here !), but also every street in Britain is loaded into its memory so if you want to go further afield..... you're set and ready to go !!
By Car : Motorway connections from Hammersmith are excellent. We are about 20 minutes from Heathrow, two minutes from the base of the M4 going westwards to Bath, Bristol, and the Cotswolds; 12 minutes from the mighty A40 going westwards to Windsor, Oxford and Birmingham; 14 minutes from the M3 going south to Southampton and Portsmouth; 20 minutes from the M1 going due north; and about 20 minutes from the M25 - the outer London ring road. So we are extremely well-placed for exploring the major out-of-town locations all over England !

Digby Mansions is situated on the corner of Lower Mall (famous for a historic walk) and Hammersmith Bridge Road. Hammersmith is in West London just next to Kensington going into the city, and if you were going further out of the city- Chiswick, Kew and Richmond. Hammersmith tube (underground) station is about 3 minutes walk away (only 5 swift stops to Knightsbridge & Harrods !) ..... and it takes 18 minutes to Piccadilly Circus.

Local Amenities :
We are literally one minute from the major banks and shops : Safeway, Marks & Spencer, Macdonalds (if you want it !), KFC and Tesco etc., a choice of four gyms, four cinemas (one award winner - showing mainly foreign films!), three West-End quality theatres and other main essentials. There are over 30 restaurants within an eight minute walk, an excellent protestant parish church (est. 1630 A.D.) within a two minute walk, and local parks and excellent amenities.

Underground Train/Subway :
'Hammersmith' station is three minutes walk away and is at a major intersection of three of the main tube lines; The Piccadilly (blue line), District (green line), and Hammersmith and City (pink line).
Buses and Bikes :
The 'No. 9' bus stop is less than a minute's walk away - and goes straight to Piccadilly Circus. There are night buses right through the night, taxi ranks close by, and even two bicycles of ours - which you are welcome to use [lovely bike rides to Barnes village duck pond (8 minutes), or Richmond Park - Henry VIII's old deer-park - still replete with free-roaming deer ..... (only a brisk 14 minutes away).

Interests : Travel is our No.1 past-time, and we both work in theatre, media and TV. We both like history, people, biographies, art, food, and international cultures.
Us : My name is Adam Wide, I am 48, and chairman of an entertainment company which employs 25 entertainment specialists, producing shows which play around the world (30+ at any one time) in 18 different locations. The company's main web-site is at : http://www.openwideInternational.com - if you want to check me (and it) out !
Before 'settling down', I was a performer, professional magician, light entertainer, and stand-up comedian - and have been featured in over 200 TV shows here in the UK (c/v available !!). Last year the BBC made a fly-on-the-wall documentary about me; 'Adam Wide's Fame Factory', which was all very flattering but deep down I just think of myself as a regular guy padding about on the planet! I share my life with my French partner Vincent Garnier (34) from Paris, who also works free-lance for the BBC in drama production.

We enjoy good living, don't smoke, and realise that it doesn't take loads of expense to have a good time.... People and atmosphere are far more rewarding than opulent luxury. We enjoy life to the full and can always find the positive side to any situation ...We are lucky, irrepressible optimists !!

You are likely to be charming and independent people, who also enjoy life with confidence. You are likely to be experienced travellers who want a calm and relaxing resting place whilst you enjoy one of the most diverse cities in the world !
We have it ....... Go for it .............. !!

Wanted :
• The USA
• Australia
• Anywhere !

Duration :
• Preferably not less than two weeks

• Sometimes as long as 4 - 8 weeks
• But we would consider anything !

Dates:
At the moment of writing this (the 1st September 2001), we are looking for Christmas 2001 and
New Year 2002 in New York. So a two week swap from about Dec 20th to Jan 5th-ish ....... Would be ideal, though longer would also be considered.

Photos
The majority of the photos used here were taken last year for a Danish design and 'life-style' magazine, and make the place look very swish ! It's certainly very much 'lived in' - and definitely not nearly as sterile as some of the photos make it appear !
We would call it 'comfortable' rather than 'luxurious' ....... but that depends on your own definition !!! Either way, it goes without saying that any living space is always improved by the addition of people. This flat is at its best when full of guests, mild madness and laughter .......

Post script
Because we both have worked hard for what we have, we fully appreciate the responsibility of being in someone elseÕs home. We take pride in our home, but more for its atmosphere than for any specific item within it . That said, we would like to think that anyone who stays in it would take as much care of it, as we would theirs.
We love living here, and would welcome the opportunity to swap with anyone, absolutely anywhere, for a similar type of property (by that, we only mean somewhere with 'character' and much enjoyed by its owners).

Because we are both effectively free-lance, we can be extremely flexible with both dates and the duration of stay ....... so, whatever the offer, large or small, luxurious or 'comfy', town or country, .......please get in touch !

Thanks, and it would be good to hear from you,

Adam Wide.

P.S. If you don't hear back from us immediately, it's because we are travelling ! We'll always reply within 24 hours if we are here !! Sorry in advance for any delay !
